Wood the ultimate building material

Published on Jul 12, 2017 | by Michael Coyle

We have been using wood as a building material for a very long time and it is interesting to note that it is used widely where weather conditions can be extreme. Iceland is spectacularly beautiful but lacking in much forestation so wood is not so easy to come by as in many other parts of the world. Pity because we know that cold climate woods, even soft wood, make brilliant building material because it grows so slowly and is therefore harder and more cohesive.

Good luck then to a parish in Iceland who have been given a church by their friends in Slovacia. Like our buildings it was prefabricate then taken on site to be erected. Just shows they have confidence that the materials will stand the test of time
